January Detox

As I’ve mentioned in my previous post I did a two week detox in January just to get rid of the festive season. I didn’t do it to loose weight but I lost two of the four kilograms I gained over December holiday. 

What Did I Do? 

I started each day with hot water and freshly squeezed lemon juice. You won’t believe how hard this is, especially if you are anything like me. I need that first cup of coffee to wake up. 
I cut my coffee down to one cup a day and just drank water. I cut as much dairy as I could, but still had a bit of cheese and milk in my coffee. I had no starch, grains, sweets, chocolate, fizzy drinks, potato chips or anything like that. I ate clean for two weeks.

I snacked on biltong and nuts as I am a snacky person, I had one smoothy a day filled with spinach, berries and rooibos tea. At night I ate what ever my family had but without the rice, mash, potatoes or spaghetti. I had a green salad (with feta cheese) every night and cut all salad dressings and sauces. It was basically clean eating for two weeks. 

Can a Detox Help You Loose Weight? 

A detox can definitely help you loose weight. I did an eight week detox two years ago and I lost a lot of weight for my size. I stopped after six weeks because I was loosing too much weight. We all have different body types, but I can assure you each body type has something that will work for you. Not everyone will benefit from a detox in loosing weight, but you will never know unless you try it. It is just very important that you stick to what you are allowed to eat and really limit your cheat meals and days. The whole idea with a proper detox is about cleaning your body, not loosing weight. The weight part of a detox is a bonus.

How Do You Feel While You Detox

At first you feel terrible, I am not even going to try sugar coat this for you. Sick to be honest. Tired with a bad head ache from the moment you open your eyes. Just as you think you can’t bare it any longer, it all turns. It could take anything from five to eight days but once you start feeling better it is all worth it. It happened the first time and it happened again the second time. I felt amazing. I had energy, felt more awake and alert, focused and in some weird way lighter. It is amazing what the right kind of food can do for your soul.

My Detox Tips

  • Don’t wait too long before you do your next detox.
  • Choose a time frame that will work for you and stick to it.
  • Eat your vegetables as raw as you can.
  • Stay away from any artificial sugars and processed foods.
  • Drink lots and lots of water.
  • Stay away from bread.
  • Stay away from dairy products.
  • Push through, it will be worth it in the end.
